How to Get the Best Out of Your V60

JournalBrew Guides

The V60 is one of the most expressive brewing methods available. Our 40/60 approach gives you control over both flavour profile and strength — so every cup is exactly what you want.

Brewing is an area where we can get the best out of our coffee. With some guidance you can get a step closer to your perfect cup — and the V60 is one of the most expressive tools for doing exactly that.

What You'll Need

V60 or Kalita

Grind

Medium-coarse

Temperature

96°C

Filter

Paper (pre-rinsed)

The 40 / 60 Method

Our approach splits the brew into two phases. The first 40% of your water develops the cup profile — sweetness, balance, or acidity. The final 60% determines strength. This lets you dial in your exact preference each time.

The Recipes

Single cup

20g coffee · 320g water

Two cups

30g coffee · 480g water

Flavour Profile — First 40%

Sweet

Pour slowly in tight circles from the centre outward

Balanced

Pour steadily in medium circles, centre to edge

Acidic

Pour faster in wide spirals from edge to centre

Strength — Final 60%

Low

One long, continuous pour

Medium

Two even pours with a short pause

High

Three pours, pausing between each

Method

  1. 1

Rinse your filter paper with hot water and discard the rinse water.

  2. 2

Add your ground coffee and gently tap to level the bed.

  3. 3

Bloom: pour twice the weight of coffee in water (e.g. 40g for a single cup) and wait 30 seconds.

  4. 4

Begin your first 40% pour using your chosen flavour profile technique.

  5. 5

Follow with the final 60% using your chosen strength technique.

  6. 6

Single cup: total brew time 2:45–3:00. Two cups: 3:30–4:00.
