How to Get the Best Out of Your AeroPress

JournalBrew Guides

We love the AeroPress. It's durable, forgiving, and gives you more room to experiment than almost any other brewer. Here's how to get the most from it.

We love the AeroPress. It's a fantastic brewer — it's durable, gives you a lot of room to experiment, and produces a remarkably clean, concentrated cup. Whether you're at home or travelling, it's one of the most versatile tools you can own.

What You'll Need

Brewer

AeroPress (inverted method)

Temperature

96°C

Coffee

15g

Water

200g + 80–90g to dilute

Grind Size Guide

Fine (< 1 min brew)

A little finer than table salt

Medium-fine (1–2 min)

Finer than sand, not as fine as espresso

Medium (2–3 min)

Similar to the consistency of regular sand

TipFor this recipe we use medium-fine. Grind fresh immediately before brewing to preserve the aromatics.

Method — Inverted Position

  1. 1

Flip the AeroPress upside down (inverted position) and place on your scale.

  2. 2

Add 15g of freshly ground coffee.

  3. 3

Pour 100g of water at 96°C and stir for 10 seconds to fully saturate the grounds.

  4. 4

Stir for a further 20 seconds, ensuring even extraction.

  5. 5

Add the remaining 100g of water.

  6. 6

    Brew for 1 minute total.

  7. 7

Flip onto your cup and press slowly for 20–30 seconds. Stop when you hear a gentle hiss.

  8. 8

Dilute with 80–90g of hot water to taste.

Troubleshooting

Too bitter

Grind more coarsely

Weak or sharp

Grind finer

Hard to press

Grind coarser or pour more slowly

Too strong

Add more water when diluting

Experiment Freely

One of the great joys of the AeroPress is that there is no single right answer. Adjust temperature, brew time, grind, and dilution to find your preference. The plasticity of the brewer means mistakes are cheap — and breakthroughs are frequent.
